Share-the-Plate Sundays-2015

Our first Share-the-Plate Sunday experiment was an unqualified success.  We spread our love all over the Waco area.

The votes are in, and our members and friends have selected the six charities we will partner with over the next six months. The winners are:

On the first Sunday of each month, a representative from the organization will be invited to give a brief overview of their work; each week for the rest of the month, our Sunday offerings will be split 50/50 with the charity (minus pledges, which are the fuel for our daily, weekly, monthly and yearly ministries and needs as a fellowship).

For August, Community Outreach Educator Francesca Austin (of Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas) spoke about the work Planned Parenthood does here in Waco and surrounding areas, including providing healthcare to men and women regardless of income, race, sexual orientation, or gender expression. Planned Parenthood also advocates for reproductive justice and equality through lobbying our state and national legislators, as well as providing fact-based, age-appropriate sex education to kids from middle-school-age on up. UUWaco sent Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas a check for $409.

In September, representatives from the McLennan Animal Rescue Coalition came to explain their work in our community – along with Merlot, the most adorable kitten you’ve ever seen. MARC is the last resort for animals in the system and a critical cog in our efforts to become a no-kill community. They rehab animals that need a little TLC before they can be adopted, they provide foster homes for animals so they will be easier to adopt out and they provide intervention services to help people keep the animals that they have. UUWaco sent MARC a check for $229.

October’s Share the Plate partner was Meals on Wheels. UUWaco has been a Meals on Wheels distribution site for almost a decade. Several of our members deliver meals to about 40 North Waco residents each Wednesday and Friday. UUWaco sent MOW a check for $218.

Cereal, fans and cash… UUWaco has delivered thousands of pounds of cereal to Caritas over the years along with our yearly fan club donations to Caritas. An important part of the Waco community, Caritas provides much needed support for our neighbors, not just with food, but with utility support and other assistance. In November UUWaco sent Caritas a check for $258.50.

December has always been a special time to partner with Talitha Koum. Our Angel Tree is always brimming over with presents for the young ones. This year, in addition to gifts for the children, UUWaco sent Talitha Koum a check for $250.

Finally, in January, we will throw some love to the Humane Society of Central Texas. We are delighted to again be able to assist them with their capital funds and expansion plans.  UUWaco sent the Humane Society a check for $500.

The Share-the-Plate program allows UUWaco members and friends to live out our core values of compassion, inclusion, inquiry, and spiritual growth in meaningful and effective ways by putting our money where our mouth is, and supporting organizations which, like us, are working to create a more just and loving world.
